Kathleen Stickney is the author of First Watch. The actions of the main character, Charlie, are driven by his belief that, “when the goodhearted are silent, evil grows stronger.” This illustrated adventure story reminds us that the first step in protecting our planet is simple awareness. We will watch. And then, voices raised, we are powerful together.

Kathleen is a champion of environmentally focused stories for middle grade and young adult readers. She believes that if young people begin to view the world, as Charlie does, they will become advocates for the natural world at an early age. As young adults they can, and will, reshape the destiny of our planet.

She works as an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon in Seattle, Washington. The Woodland Park Zoo has honored her with requests for assistance. Her animal patients have included a Lemur, a penguin, and a Patas monkey named Fiona. Kathleen has not forgotten a wish to write adventure stories for young people that encourage them to cherish and advocate for our wondrous planet. She hopes that characters, like Charlie, will empower young people to see that together they are mighty. One person, with a deep desire to “protect the unprotected” can move mountains.

Kathleen works closely with her talented illustrator and friend, Sophia Scull.
